Profile

Mary Gitumbi is the founder of and lead lawyer in Muthoni Gitumbi & Co. Advocates. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya of 10 years standing, having been admitted to the bar in 1998. Ms. Gitumbi studied at Nairobi University and the Kenya School of Law before starting her legal career as a pupil in Hamilton Harrison & Mathews, one of the leading and oldest law firms in the country. After completion of her pupilage, Ms Gitumbi was offered permanent employment in the same law firm in the Commercial Department, where she worked for a period of 6 years. Ms. Gitumbi was able to acquire a wealth of experience during this period, with her responsibilities growing over the years as she became more experienced, confident and established in her practice of commercial law. In order to broaden her knowledge and understanding of business as well as her world view, Ms. Gitumbi proceeded to Germany in 2004 to join Purdue University’s GISMA Business School located in Hannover. She pursued her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree on a scholarship awarded to her by the University. On completion of her studies, Ms. Gitumbi returned to Kenya to take up employment as a Project Manager of a project owned by Dutch and German investors in Kenya and partially funded by the Agency for International Business (part of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs) where she oversaw the investment of €1,400,000 in Kenya to the satisfaction of the investors. After that Ms. Gitumbi set up Muthoni Gitumbi & Co. Advocates.

The firm’s global outlook is mostly driven by Ms. Gitumbi’s own international orientation; she being an avid traveler and having an interest in foreign cultures and languages. Apart from having studied her Masters degree in Germany, Ms. Gitumbi has had the opportunity to travel to other countries in Europe, including France, Belgium and Holland. On the African continent, Ms. Gitumbi has traveled to Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. Ms. Gitumbi speaks French and German in addition to English, Swahili and her native language.

 
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS  
LL.B (Hons.), Nbi. Diploma in Law (KSL), MBA (Purdue), CPS (K), Advocate, Commissioner for Oaths, graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1997 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) (Hons.) Degree and was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya on 29th of December 1998.
